How to Start a Bankruptcy
First, you must provide the attorney with 6 things.
- Take a credit counseling course. We suggest you use Black Hills Children’s Ranch, Inc. or Money Management International, Inc. bankruptcycertificate.com The course costs $50.00 each person, takes a couple hours at most. When you have completed the online course, call the service and speak with a counselor. Have the certificate e mailed to you and faxed to your attorney (916) 391-8086.
- Tax return: We have to furnish the Trustee your latest tax return, so copy it and give it to us at your next meeting.
- Paycheck stubs: We have to furnish the Trustee your last two paycheck stubs. Bring them to your next meeting with us.
- Bills: We need to list all your bills on the Petition. Bring all your recent credit card bills, house payment(s) and car payment(s) to us. We need addresses and account numbers, so if you are paying the bill, such as a house payment, be sure the copy you bring us has the necessary information.
- General information: Fill out the “Client Questionnaire” as best as possible.
- Social Security card: You will need to show proof of your social security card at the Trustee’s meeting. Locate it or locate proof of the number otherwise, such as the number on a paycheck, another card of some sort, or on a tax return prepared by a tax preparer.
